2022 Black History Month: Rooted In Blackness

In celebration of Black History Month 2022, The Loveland Group ventures have curated a catalog of ‘Rooted in Blackness’ offerings.

The roots of all we have come to appreciate about arts, music, culture, science and literature are rooted in the expression and expertise of Black people, culture and community.

A time to tap into the guidance of ancestors - connecting with their wisdom reminds us of our roots, and all we can be grounded in. Reminding us to dream, reimagine, how to celebrate and to honor.

The recent conversations surrounding Critical Race Theory have elevated messages of harm and mis-information. There have been several statewide book bans in schools and libraries on works by QTBIPOC writers and creators.

In an effort to combat this harm and misinformation and support these imperative and seminal offerings, we are choosing to raise and magnify imperative works of art, music, food, literature and science, contributed by Black people and culture over time.

Beloved Taught Me

In honor of our Black History Month programming - Rooted in Blackness - Elizabeth’s Bookshop & Writing Centre placed special attention towards honoring Toni Morrison’s timeless and essential text, Beloved.

We have collaborated with artists - Hanif Abdurraqib, Candice Iloh, EbonyJanice, Mahogany Brown, Robert Jones Jr., and Staceyann Chin - to read a piece of Beloved, and share what Beloved has taught them.

Beloved Book Drive

The Beloved Book Drive ran from February 1 - 28, 2022, and the community contributed over 2,000 copies of Beloved for distribution. Elizabeth’s Bookshop and Writing Centre has identified local organizations such as schools, libraries and book banks to benefit from receiving donated copies.

Do The Work For Young Learners

Black History Month is an opportunity to review and learn the foundational contributions to how we exist in the world that have been made by Black people and culture.

After the incredible success of participation from so many for Rachel Cargle’s signature free online learning curriculum, Do The Work, The Great Unlearn for Young Learners (TGUYL) is excited to announce Do The Work for Young Learners - a four week curriculum of daily activities, readings, visuals and journal prompts to guide the young person in your life through the history and impact of Black people and culture. This 4 week offering focuses on a different sector each week:

  • Week One (2/6): Black American Innovators in the Culinary Arts

  • Week Two (2/13): Black American Innovators in STEAM

  • Week Three (2/20): Black American Innovators in the Arts

  • Week Four (2/27): Black American Innovators in Government

By signing up for TGUYL’s mailing list, throughout the month of February, subscribers received a weekly guide of daily activations to do with your young person and family.

Office Hours: State of Unlearning with Rachel Cargle
Wed., Feb. 9, 2022 @ 7:00 - 8:00 pm EST

The recent conversations surrounding Critical Race Theory have elevated messages of harm and mis-information. There have been several statewide book bans in schools and libraries on works by QTBIPOC writers and creators, preventing access and discrediting seminal works of literature and art that are imperative for the growth and development of a healthy and equitable society.

Join Rachel Cargle for an intimate conversation on the State of Unlearning as she returns to the Roots of Blackness, delving into what this moment presents to us, the state of unlearning and what is next.

To view a replay of this and other Office Hours, become a part of the The Great Unlearn community by joining via Patreon.

To compliment our catalog of “Rooted in Blackness” programming, the Loveland staff compiled venture specific bookshelves - available via Elizabeth’s online bookshop.
